What is the difference between an uncensored AI model and a jailbroken ChatGPT?
Short answer: An uncensored model has its refusals edited out and runs on a box you control. A jailbreak is a prompt trick against a hosted service that can patch it.

What are these two things in plain words?
They are two different routes to fewer refusals. One changes the model. The other tricks a service.
An uncensored model is an open model whose refusal behaviour has been edited, so it declines less often. Some call this abliterated, which means the part of the model that drives refusals was dampened. You download it and run it on a machine you control. A jailbreak is a prompt written to talk a hosted assistant out of its rules. The model is unchanged. Only the instruction is clever.
Who controls each one?
With an uncensored model on your own box, you control the file, the settings and the machine. Nobody else can change it overnight unless you let them. Updates happen when you choose.
With a jailbreak, the service owner controls everything. They can fix the loophole, change the filters, or end your account. A trick that works today can stop working tomorrow with no notice, and you have no say.
What about stability and logging?
Think about the day-to-day too. A tool you use for real work needs to behave the same way next week as it does today. A trick against a hosted service cannot promise that, while a file on your own disk stays exactly as you left it until you change it.
A jailbreak is fragile by nature, because it depends on a gap the owner can close. Hosted services may keep records of what you type. Whether they do, and for how long, is set by the provider, so read the current terms of the exact plan you use.
A model on your own box has no provider to patch it. What gets logged is up to your setup: you can keep conversation history, or keep none. Our page on chat history on your own server explains the choice. A private setup lowers the number of parties that hold your data. It does not remove the need for strong passwords and backups.
What do you give up on quality?
Both routes cost something. Editing a model to refuse less can change how it writes and reasons, and some versions get worse at careful tasks. Open models you can run yourself may also trail the largest hosted ones on some jobs.
A jailbreak keeps the strong hosted model, but the long, odd prompt can bend the answer and use up room you wanted for your real task. Test with your own work either way. The uncensored models guide shows how to compare candidates.
Does a jailbreak break the service's terms?
It can. Some hosted services may bar working around their safeguards, and may end accounts for it. Read the current terms of the service you use, because they can change.
Running an open model on your own machine is a different matter. There is no provider rule to get around, but each model has its own license, which you should read. See model licenses. We do not give jailbreak prompts or methods.
Who is responsible for what comes out?
You are, either way. Fewer refusals do not make a request wise, lawful or accurate. A model can also be wrong, so you check outputs before you use them.
An uncensored model removes a safety layer you may have wanted. That is your choice to weigh, and it is wise to set your own rules for who may use the tool and for what jobs. Adults only is a basic rule for any such use, and Freeborn blocks, logs and reports anything involving minors.
Which route fits which reader?
If you want steady, controlled use, an uncensored model on your own box is the more stable path. If you only want to poke at a hosted service for an afternoon, a jailbreak is a trial that may break anytime.
If you would rather have a person do the setup, see our private uncensored AI and the private AI setup service. If you would rather build it yourself, start with the DIY guides. A longer view of the hosted side is in why hosted assistants refuse.
What are the limits?
Neither route removes your own responsibility for how you use outputs. Laws on content, work and data differ by place, and this page is general information, not legal, medical, financial or tax advice. Ask your own counsel, compliance officer or adviser if a use is unclear.

- Fewer refusals do not mean more accuracy.
- An edited model can be worse at some tasks.
- A hosted service can change its rules at any time.
- You still need passwords, access limits and backups.
Questions
Is an abliterated model the same as an uncensored one?
They overlap. Abliterated names one method of editing a model so it refuses less. Uncensored is the looser everyday label for the result. Can a jailbreak make a hosted model smarter?
No. It changes what the model is willing to answer, not what it knows. The answer can still be wrong. Can I switch from one to the other later?
Yes. They are separate choices. Moving to your own box means picking a model, a runner and a place to host it.Do I need special hardware for an uncensored model?
You need enough memory for the size you choose, either on a graphics card or in a cloud account. Our GPU sizing guide covers the sizes.Does a private setup hide what I do from everyone?
No. It lowers the number of parties holding your data. You still control access, and your own records remain yours to manage.Related guides
