Why does ChatGPT refuse some requests, and what do uncensored models change?

Short answer: Hosted assistants refuse when the provider's rules say so. A model you run yourself follows its training and your instructions. The law and your duty stay.

Why does a hosted assistant like ChatGPT refuse some requests?

A hosted assistant refuses a request when the company that runs it has decided, through its rules or its filters, that the assistant should not help with that kind of request. You are using the company's service, so the company sets the limits, the same way a store sets its own return policy.

Those limits come from two places. The first is the model's own training, where it is taught to decline some things. The second is a layer around the model that checks what goes in and what comes out. Either one can produce a refusal, and you usually cannot tell which one fired.

Who decides what a hosted assistant will and will not do?

The provider decides, and the provider can change its mind. A hosted service sets its own content rules and can update them at any time, so a request that worked last month may be declined today, or the reverse.

That is neither good nor bad in itself. It means your workflow depends on someone else's policy. If you rely on an assistant for daily work, read the current terms of the exact plan you use, and expect them to move.

What changes when you run your own model?

When you run your own model, the model follows its own training plus whatever instructions you set, and no outside provider adds a second set of rules on top. An open-weight model (one whose trained file is published so anyone can run it) can be chosen, changed and kept on a machine you control.

Some open models are trained to refuse less on lawful adult topics. People often call these uncensored. In plain words, that means fewer refusals and less lecturing, not an absence of all limits. Each model still has its own habits, and you can read more about picking one in our guide to uncensored models.

What does not change when the refusals are gone?

The law does not change, and neither does your responsibility for what you ask for and do with the answers. Removing a provider's filter removes a rule from the tool. It does not remove a rule from the world.

Quality does not change by magic either. The assistant can be wrong and can make things up, including facts, figures and citations, so you must check every output before you use it. Fewer refusals can also mean fewer warnings, which makes your own review more important, not less.

What does Freeborn Labs allow and not allow?

Freeborn Labs is for adults only, 18 and over, and it is built for lawful use. Its terms of use (currently marked as a draft) say you are responsible for what you ask for and what you do with the output, and that you will not use the service to break the law.

One limit is fixed. Anything involving minors is blocked, logged and reported, and no wording or stated age changes that. Uncensored here means the assistant stops lecturing and refusing lawful adult requests. It is not a way around the law, and the assistant is not a lawyer, doctor or financial adviser. How do you get an assistant that is yours to configure?

You have three routes. You can use another shared app, which puts you back under a provider's rules, as the comparison of private ChatGPT alternatives explains. You can build your own setup, or you can ask a person to do it.

If you would rather have a person do it, Freeborn Labs sets up and runs a private assistant in a cloud account you own, then trains you to use it. If you would rather build it yourself, start with the do-it-yourself guides and be ready for model choice, hosting, backups and upkeep.

What are the limits?

A model you run yourself removes one safety layer that some people want to keep, so decide on purpose which rules you will write for your own use. Quality varies between models, so check what a model gives you. A private setup still needs strong passwords, access limits and backups, and Freeborn Labs promises no outcomes.

Questions

Is an uncensored model the same as a jailbroken one?

No. A jailbreak tries to talk a hosted service out of its rules, while an uncensored model is one trained to refuse less in the first place. Getting around a hosted service's rules can break its terms, so check the current terms of the plan you use.

Will an uncensored model answer anything at all?

No. It refuses less on lawful adult topics, but it still has its own limits, and at Freeborn anything involving minors is blocked, logged and reported. The law applies to you either way.

Why did my chatbot refuse something it answered last week?

The provider may have changed its rules, its filters or the model behind the service. Hosted services can update these without notice, so check the current terms and settings of your plan.

Do I need technical skill to run my own model?

Running one takes real setup and upkeep, such as choosing a model, hosting it, securing it and backing it up. You can learn it from the guides or have a person set it up for you.

Does removing refusals make the answers more accurate?

No. Accuracy and refusals are separate things. The assistant can still be wrong, so check what it tells you before you act on it.
