Where to host a private AI agent: options compared

Short answer: Hosting a private AI agent at home, on a rented GPU, on a big cloud, or on a shared app: cost, privacy, risk of bans and effort.

At home

A powerful desktop or a Mac with large memory runs mid-size models. No rental fees and nothing leaves the house. You buy the hardware, handle updates and heat, and the biggest models will not fit.

A rented GPU marketplace

Providers like Vast.ai rent cards by the hour and are the cheapest way to reach 80GB or more of video memory. Hosts vary in quality and some withdraw machines, so keep your setup portable. Content rules differ by provider; read them.

A large cloud

The big clouds offer reliability and compliance paperwork at higher prices, and some restrict categories of content in their terms. Good for regulated business data, less so for adult-oriented use.

A shared app

Nothing to host and the cheapest to start, but it is the vendor servers and rules. Our default is a customer-owned account on a GPU marketplace, billed to you at cost, so a ban or failure affects only your own setup and we can move it to another host.

How to decide

Start with what you must protect and what you can tolerate. If a host ban would be a disaster, favor a setup you can move in an afternoon, with configuration and data backed up off the host. If budget is tight, rent by the hour and shut the machine down when you are not working. If you want none of this on your plate, hire it done. Whatever you pick, keep keys under your control and write down how to rebuild the setup from scratch, so no single provider becomes a trap.
