A self-hosted AI agent: what it is and what it takes
Short answer: A self-hosted AI agent runs on hardware or a cloud GPU you control, so your data and rules stay yours. What it takes to run one, and the done-for-you option.

What self-hosted means
A self-hosted agent is one where you, not a vendor, control the machine that runs the model. The model weights are open and downloaded, the software that serves them is open, and the data the agent touches never has to pass through a third party's chatbot. You choose the model, set the rules and decide what is logged.
Home hardware or rented cloud GPU
You can run a smaller model on a powerful desktop or a Mac with plenty of memory. The strongest open models need about 80GB of video memory even when compressed, which is why most people rent a GPU by the hour from a provider such as Vast.ai instead. Renting costs only while it runs, and you can stop it overnight. Owning costs more up front and gives you a fixed machine that you must keep updated and cooled.
What can go wrong
Rented machines can be withdrawn by their host, so back up your setup and keep it portable. Open models differ widely in how they handle tool calls, so test before you trust one with real accounts. Updates to the serving engine can break a working configuration. And an agent with access to your email is a high-value target, so store keys encrypted and grant the narrowest permission.
Having it done for you
Freeborn Labs builds a self-hosted agent for you in a cloud account that you own, connects it, and supports it. It costs $10,000 setup plus $48,000 a year or $4,800 a month, with compute billed to you at cost. Adults only; child-safety violations are blocked and reported.
Questions
Is a self-hosted AI agent more private?
More private than a shared chatbot, yes, because the data stays in an account you control. Not invisible: the model and the GPU host process your text while it runs.
What GPU do I need to self-host an agent?
For a large open model, about 80GB of video memory. Smaller models run on less but are weaker.
