Open-source vs closed AI: which is more private?
Short answer: Open models you run yourself are more private than closed hosted models, but not invisible. How the two compare on data, rules, quality and cost.

The core difference
With a closed model such as ChatGPT or Claude, your text goes to the vendor, who runs the model and sets the rules. With an open model you download the weights and run them on a machine you choose, so you decide where text goes and what is logged. That control is the privacy advantage.
Where closed models are better
Quality on the hardest tasks, very long context, polish and speed to start. Closed vendors also invest heavily in security, and some offer business plans that do not train on your data. For many people those plans are private enough, and cheaper.
Where open models are better
You hold the data and the account, nothing changes without your consent, there are no per-message caps, and refusals are yours to set. Open weights also let you audit and pin a version so behavior does not shift under you.
Which to choose
Use a closed business plan if your data policy allows it and you want top quality. Use an open model in your own account if you want control, no refusals or independence from a vendor. Many people use both. Freeborn Labs builds the open version for you: $10,000 setup plus $48,000 a year or $4,800 a month.
A fair caution
Open does not automatically mean safe. A badly secured open-model server can leak more than a well-run vendor service. The privacy gain comes from running it carefully: authentication, encrypted storage, limited access and updates. If you cannot or will not do that work, pay someone who will, or use a reputable business plan.
Questions
Is open-source AI more private than ChatGPT?
Yes when you run it in your own account, because the text is not sent to a vendor. Not invisible.
Does ChatGPT train on my data?
Consumer plans may by default; business plans typically do not. Check current settings and policies.
