How do I leave ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and take my chat history with me?
Short answer: Request your export, store it somewhere you control, make it searchable, then close the old account. A step by step plan to move to a private assistant.

Can you really leave and keep your chat history?
Most people can, because many chat apps let you request a copy of your data. The steps and the file format change from app to app and from plan to plan, so check the current steps in your app's settings or help pages.
Plan the move in five parts: ask for the export, check what you got, store it, make it searchable, and only then close the old account. Do them in that order. Closing first can cost you the history.
How do you request your export?
Look in your account settings for a data export or data controls section, and follow the steps there. Some apps send a download link by email after a wait, and that link may expire, so download it as soon as it arrives.
Do this for every account you use, including any work account and any old ones. If you pay for a business plan, the account owner may have to make the request, so ask them early. Write down the date you asked.
What does an export usually hold?
An export is usually a bundle of files holding your conversations and some account details, but what is inside differs by app. Open it before you trust it. Check that your oldest and longest chats are there.
Look for three gaps. Files and images you uploaded may be missing. Custom instructions and saved settings may be stored apart from the chats. Projects or shared chats may not come across at all. Note what is missing now, while the old account still works.
- Conversations: the text of what you and the AI said.
- Account details: name, email and settings.
- Uploaded files: check these are included.
- Custom instructions: copy them out by hand if needed.
- Shared or team chats: these may need a separate request.
Where should you keep the history?
Keep it on storage you control, with a backup, and treat it as sensitive. Your old chats may hold client names, drafts, health notes or money matters, so a loose folder in a shared drive is not enough.
Use a folder with a strong password, an encrypted disk, and a second copy kept elsewhere. Our page on backing up private AI data walks through that. Delete the downloaded zip from your email and downloads folder once it is stored properly.
How do you turn the export into a private searchable archive?
Split the export into one file per conversation, then index those files so you can search them by meaning, not just by word. The first step is plain text work. The second is what a search tool does when it reads your files and builds a map of them.
Our guides on private document search with local AI and local embeddings for private search explain how that works. Once it is set up, you can ask your own assistant, "what did I decide about the lease last spring?" and get pointed to the right chat. Check each answer against the source chat, because the AI can be wrong.
What should you stop pasting while you switch?
Stop putting anything new and sensitive into the old app as soon as you decide to leave. Whatever you paste during the move is one more thing sitting in an account you are about to close.
Use the waiting period for low risk work, such as general writing. Keep client files, legal drafts, deal papers and personal records for the new setup. Compare your options in private ChatGPT alternatives compared, and see private AI versus ChatGPT for what changes.
When should you close the old account, and who can do the setup?
Close it after you have checked the export, stored it, tested your search and waited until you are sure nothing is missing. Then delete the account using the app's own steps. Check the current terms for how deletion works and how long saved copies may last.
If you would rather have a person do the move, Freeborn Labs sets up and runs a private assistant in a cloud account you own, loads your archive, and trains you to use it. We do not hold your files, and you can walk away with the setup. See the private AI setup service. If you would rather build it yourself, start with the DIY guides.
What are the limits?
This page is general information, not legal, medical, financial or tax advice. Ask your own counsel, compliance officer or adviser if your old chats hold regulated or confidential records, or if you may have to keep them for a set period before you delete anything. More questions are answered in the private AI answers hub.
A private setup lowers the number of parties who hold your data. It does not remove the need for strong passwords, backups and your own review.
- An export may be partial, so verify it before you delete anything.
- Deleting an account may not erase every copy the old company holds.
- A new assistant will not remember your old chats unless you load them in.
- Models differ, so answers will not match what you got before.
- The AI can be wrong, so check what it writes.
What it costs
A place costs a one-time setup from $10,000 (the setup price rises with each place sold), plus $48,000 a year in dues paid up front (or $4,800 a month). Compute is billed to you at cost. Hands-on training and on-call support are extra, by the hour.
Questions
How long does an export take to arrive?
It varies by app and by how much history you have. Some send the file by email after a delay, so start early and download it as soon as it comes. Can I import my old chats into a new assistant so it remembers them?
You can load the text into a searchable archive, so the new assistant can look things up. That is different from the assistant remembering them on its own. What if I use a work account?
The organization may own that data, and the account owner may control exports. Ask your IT lead or counsel before you take anything out.Should I keep the old account open for a while?
Often yes, for a short overlap while you test the new archive. Stop sending sensitive material to it during that time.Do I need to move every chat?
No. Many people keep only the chats worth searching later and drop the rest. Decide what to keep before you store the export, and note how long you will keep it.Related guides
