Claude Code vs Your Own GPU: How to Work Out the Cost
Short answer: Compare the cost of Claude Code with renting your own GPU: what drives each bill, break-even thinking, and hidden costs.

Two different bills
A hosted plan is usually a subscription, sometimes with usage-based charges for heavy work. Your own GPU is hourly rental or hardware you buy, plus setup and upkeep. Get the vendor's current price from its pricing page and your cloud provider's rate; this page does not quote them because they change.
Count your real usage
Estimate hours per week of actual agent work and how often you hit caps. A person coding two hours a day will rarely pay back a dedicated GPU. A person running agents most of the working day, or several people sharing, is a closer call.
GPU cost drivers
The card size, hours running, region, and whether you leave it on overnight. An idle rented GPU keeps billing. Shut it down or schedule it. Storage and network add small amounts. Larger models need pricier cards.
Hidden costs on both sides
Hosted: time lost to caps, refusals and waiting for resets. Own GPU: setup time, maintenance, updates, security and the time spent fixing weaker output. Price your hours honestly, they are usually the biggest number.
Quality changes the maths
A cheaper tool that needs three more review rounds is not cheaper. A hosted frontier model finishes hard tasks faster. An open model is fine for routine work. Compare cost per finished task, not per month.
Freeborn's pricing, plainly
Freeborn Labs charges $10,000 to set up a private AI in your cloud account, then $48,000 a year up front or $4,800 a month, with compute at cost and hands-on help extra. That is far above a subscription; it only makes sense for heavy use or special needs. Qwen-family model, 32k context, weaker than Claude on large codebases.
The honest break-even question
Do not buy this because it sounds free of limits. Ask what a blocked hour costs you. If you bill by the hour or ship by the week, time lost to caps, refusals and flags is the number to compare. A solo builder who loses two hours a week to friction has lost something worth a little. A small studio whose several people stall on caps daily has lost something worth much more, and a fixed fee plus compute starts to make sense, because adding a fifth person adds GPU load, not a fifth subscription and a fifth set of caps. Be equally honest on the other side. Our setup fee is a serious sum, the model is weaker than the best hosted one, and heavy reasoning work will finish faster on the hosted tool. Most customers who benefit keep both: the hosted model for the hard 10 percent, and the private one for the long tail of dull but legitimate jobs that would otherwise count against a meter.
Questions
Is my own GPU cheaper?
For light use, no. For heavy, uncapped use it can be.
What is the biggest hidden cost?
Your own time, on both routes.
Do you quote Claude's price?
