AI and Trading EAs: Build, Test and Doubt

Short answer: What a trading EA is, how AI helps write and test one, and how to avoid scams. Educational only.

What an EA is

An expert advisor is an automated program that runs inside a trading platform, most often MetaTrader, and places trades by coded rules. It is not a person or an oracle. It repeats its rules without emotion, which helps discipline and also repeats mistakes.

Where AI fits

An assistant can draft EA code in the platform's language, explain existing code, add risk controls and convert a written idea into testable rules. It can also read a strategy tester report and explain the weak spots. It cannot supply a winning idea.

Testing properly

Use tick-quality data where possible, include spread and commission, and test across different market regimes. Split into in-sample and out-of-sample periods. An EA optimized until the curve looks smooth is usually overfitted and fails when live.

Marketplace caution

Many sold EAs advertise perfect curves, tiny drawdowns and limited-time prices. Insist on a verified live track record, ideally on independent tracking, and ask whether you can see the logic. Never accept an EA that needs you to hand over account passwords.

Operating it

Run it on a demo account first, then micro size. Monitor for disconnects, set a daily loss cap and review weekly. Keep notes on every change so you know what altered performance.

Working with Freeborn Labs

Freeborn Labs sets up a private assistant in your own cloud account for developing and reviewing EAs. Setup $10,000, then $48,000 yearly up front or $4,800 monthly, compute at cost. Educational, not financial advice; leveraged trading can lose more than expected.

Code review at 2 a.m.

For asking what an EA is, a $20 ChatGPT plan works. Developing one means feeding in long source files, tester reports and broker quirks, and asking for brutal review. Hosted tools may decline code that sends orders, hedge each reply or truncate big files. A private unrestricted assistant reads the whole project, finds the lot-size bug, adds the daily-loss lock and rewrites the logic you describe, without a speech about trading risks you already know. Your source code stays in your account instead of a public vendor's logs, which matters when the logic is your only asset. Vendor rule changes will not interrupt a build. Rivals who buy sealed EAs cannot see why theirs fail; you can open yours and fix it. You still face costs and randomness, but at least the machine is yours. Speed matters in iteration: ten tester reports in an afternoon, each reviewed for overfitting, with parameter changes explained. Rivals waiting on a developer or arguing with a tool that will not touch order-sending code run two experiments in the same time and decide on thinner evidence.

Questions

Do EAs make guaranteed money?

No. Many fail live even after good backtests.

Can AI write an EA?

Yes, drafts are possible, but you must review and test the code carefully.

What is overfitting?

Tuning a strategy so closely to past data that it captures noise and fails on new data.
