What it is
AI roleplay chat is collaborative fiction with a language model. You describe a setting and a character, the model plays its part, and you reply in character. It is software producing text, not a person, and its enthusiasm is generated, not felt. That is fine for storytelling, and worth remembering.
Write a character card
Give the model a name, personality in three or four traits, speech habits, goals, secrets, and what the character will not do. Add a short scenario: where, when, what just happened. Specific beats long. A card of 200 well-chosen words usually outperforms a page of adjectives.
Keeping continuity
Models forget. Keep a running summary at the top: key events, relationships, promises, inventory. Update it every ten or twenty messages. Models follow facts they can see; they lose the ones buried in a long scroll.
Steering the story
Use brackets or a note to the narrator for out-of-character direction, such as pacing or shifting the scene. Ask for choices at turning points. If the character drifts, restate the card in one line instead of arguing.
Adults and boundaries
Roleplay is for adults only, and characters and scenes should involve adults only. Set your own limits, take breaks, and keep fiction separate from decisions about real life. Do not write sexual content about real people.
Working with Freeborn Labs
Freeborn Labs sets up a private assistant in your own cloud account so your characters and stories stay with you. Setup $10,000, then $48,000 a year up front or $4,800 monthly, compute at cost. We keep it adults only.
Story quality is mostly about fewer interruptions
A $20 ChatGPT plan is perfectly decent for light creative writing. Serious storytellers hit a ceiling: scenes cut short by refusals on dark themes that any published novel contains, villains softened into helpers and a lecture where a plot twist belonged. A private unrestricted assistant for adults keeps the antagonist menacing, holds a full campaign bible in view and does not pause the tale to hedge. Your stories are not in a public vendor's logs, and a vendor cannot retune the model mid-campaign and flatten your world. Writers using hosted tools spend their effort negotiating with filters; you spend yours on plot. Depth and consistency over a hundred sessions is the real gain, and it makes a visible difference in the finished story. Take a concrete case: a ten-chapter noir with a corrupt detective, where the villain needs to stay cruel and the tone grim. Rivals on hosted tools get a detective who suddenly offers therapy; you get the chapter you outlined, and a continuity notebook the model actually uses.
Questions
Why does my character forget things?
The model only sees a limited window of text. Keep a summary pinned near the top.
Is the character real?
No. It is generated text following your description.
How long should a character card be?
Often 150 to 300 words is enough if each line says something specific.
