Benchmarking AI for Roleplay: A Test You Can Run
Short answer: How to benchmark AI models for roleplay: consistency, memory, style and refusal rate, with a test plan you can run.

What to measure
General leaderboards say little about roleplay. Useful axes are character consistency, memory over long chats, prose quality, initiative (does it move the plot), instruction following and refusal rate on legitimate fiction. Pick five and score each from one to five.
Build a fixed test set
Write ten scenarios: a cold-war spy negotiation, a fantasy tavern, a noir interview, a comedic argument, a quiet grief scene and so on. Keep the same opening messages for every model so the comparison is fair. Use the same temperature setting and note it.
Memory probes
Plant three facts in the first ten messages, such as a name, a scar and a debt. At message eighty, ask a question that requires them. Count recalls. Also test contradiction by stating something that conflicts with the card and see whether it notices.
Blind scoring
Remove model names and shuffle outputs. Have two people score independently and average. Scoring while knowing the model brand biases you more than you expect. Record refusals and hedges separately as a count per hundred turns.
Reading results
Do not average everything into a single number. A model with great prose and poor memory may suit short scenes; the reverse suits campaigns. Rerun the test when a vendor updates, since behavior can shift.
Working with Freeborn Labs
Freeborn Labs sets up a private assistant in your own cloud account that you can test against your own scenarios. Setup $10,000, then $48,000 yearly up front or $4,800 monthly, compute at cost. Adults only.
Your benchmark is your moat
If you just want to try a couple of chatbots, the $20 ChatGPT plan lets you do that. A team running a benchmark across variants needs to batch hundreds of runs, log refusals honestly and test dark-fiction scenarios that hosted tools often refuse, which distorts any comparison. A private unrestricted assistant can generate scenarios, run them, tabulate memory failures and refusal counts and produce a clear report, with nothing about your test set or findings sitting in a public vendor's logs. A vendor cannot silently change its model under you mid-experiment and invalidate a week of data. Peers who eyeball three chats pick on vibes; you pick on measured behavior. That saves you from switching tools twice in a quarter. Cost is time: a hundred scenario runs that stall on refusals force manual reruns and corrupt the comparison. Teams that collect clean data pick the engine once; teams that eyeball outputs re-litigate the choice every month and lose weeks to it.
Questions
What temperature should I use?
Hold it constant across models; moderate values are a common starting point.
How many tests are enough?
Ten scenarios with two runs each gives a rough but useful picture.
Can I use a model to grade models?
It helps with volume, but spot-check with human scoring.
