AI Trading Bots: Under the Hood and Around the Scams
Short answer: Understand how AI trading bots work, what they cost you, scam warnings and safer ways to build one.

What a bot is
A trading bot is software that watches data and sends orders by rules. The AI part may generate those rules, classify news or set position sizes. The bot itself is not intelligent in any magical sense; it executes whatever logic it was given, including flawed logic, at machine speed.
The scam pattern
Be wary of bots sold with screenshots of profits, monthly subscriptions, guaranteed returns or pressure to deposit with a specific broker. Real results are hard to verify and past results do not promise future ones. If you cannot read the code or the verified track record, assume nothing.
Building the safe version
Begin with paper trading using fake money. Add hard limits: max position size, max daily loss, a kill switch that halts everything. Log every order. Run it small for weeks before real money, and keep your API keys restricted so they can trade but never withdraw.
Failure modes
Data feed outages, duplicate orders, API changes, slippage in fast markets and strategies that stop working when conditions shift. Plan for what happens when your bot is offline or wrong.
Where AI helps
Writing and reviewing the code, producing test cases, summarizing logs after a bad day and explaining why an order did what it did. It speeds development but cannot supply an edge that does not exist.
Working with Freeborn Labs
Freeborn Labs sets up a private assistant in your own cloud account so bot code, keys and logs stay with you; keys sit in an encrypted vault. Setup $10,000, then $48,000 yearly up front or $4,800 monthly, compute at cost. Educational, not financial advice.
The review loop wins
For asking what a bot is, regular ChatGPT does fine. For building one, you will paste three hundred lines, error logs and exchange documentation, and ask for harsh criticism. Hosted tools may refuse when code touches order placement, soften bug findings or lecture about risk in every reply. A private unrestricted assistant reads the entire repository, finds the double-order race condition, writes tests and drafts the kill switch, and your keys, code and logs are not sitting in a public vendor's logs. A rule change at a vendor will not strand a project halfway. Rivals who rent a black-box bot pay monthly for logic they cannot inspect; you own yours and can fix it at midnight. That ownership is the advantage, not any promise of profit. A rival who bought a sealed bot cannot tell why it lost on Tuesday and waits for the seller to answer email. Your assistant reads your order log against the exchange documentation within minutes, identifies the bug and ships a patch before the next session opens.
Questions
Can a bot guarantee profit?
No. Anyone promising that is misleading you.
Should I give a bot withdrawal access?
Never. Create keys limited to trading only.
How long should I test?
Weeks of paper trading at minimum, then very small live size, and review every anomaly.
